The recorded history of Scotland begins with the roman invasion of Britain in the 1st century A.D. After the Normans conquerred England in 1066, a number of Anglo-Saxon settled in the lowlands of Scotland. Here the Scots gradually started acquiring the ways of English. Feudalism was established and the chiefs of the clans were transferred to nobles. Towns grew, trade increased and Scotland prospered.The rulers of Scotland can be divided into early phase rulers and rulers from 1093-1371. little is known about the early rulers of Scotland. In the early 1000's Malcolm II emerged as the first ruler of Scotland. Malcolm suceeded as a king in 1005.

Violent rivalries marked the early history of th Scottish kings. About 1018, he has won control over Lothian. About 1034 Malcolm's grandson Duncan I succeeded the throne but he was a weak king. Duncan's general Macbeth killed him in a battle and succeded the throne. He proved to be a strong ruler. The rulers of Scotland from 1093-1371 were engaged in mutual struggle to succed the throne.
