After the Normans conquerred England in 1066, a number of Anglo-Saxon settled in the lowlands of Scotland. Here the Scots gradually started acquiring the ways of English. Feudalism was established and the chiefs of the clans were transferred to nobles. Towns grew, trade increased and Scotland prospered. In 1290 the heiress to the throne, Margaret died and thirteen claimants contested fo th crown. Edward I of England claimed the right and made Jihn de Baliol the king.
In the later middle ages of Scotland, it suffered from weak kings and powerful nobles. Towards the end of the 18th century Scots were pre-eminent in establishing colonies in America, Canada and Australia and from that time the history of Scotland merged with the rest of the United Kingdom.
