Martyrs of England

The 16th century witnessed the great dispute between King Henry VIII and the Pope. Although the debate began on the point of religion, it soon assumed political dimension. This royal conflict resulted mass murdering of Catholics who stood against the royalty. This period in England saw the the death of large number of innocent Catholics and these Catholics have been respected with the title of martyrs of England.
The Vatican, in the year 1970, chose 40 martyrs of England who sacrificed their life for the sake of religion during the period from 1535 to 1679. These 40 martyrs of England will represent all the innocent people who died due to the conflict between the church and the monarchy. Each of the martyrs of England have been assigned an individual memorial day. However, 25 October is celebrated in the memory of all the martyrs of England. Church masses are organized on the memorials of the martyrs of England.
