Scotland became the first country after Sparta in ancient Greece which introduced the public education system for the first time. Education in schools was made compulsory in Scotland with the Education Act of 1496. Aftermath in the year 1561, the Church of Scotland introduced a special program for spiritual reformation among the schools, and it brought inside its scope all schools in every part of the country.
