The education system in Scotland is altogether different from that of the rest of the United Kingdom. Scotland is the first country after Sparta which introduced an education system of in order to educate the mass. Schooling was made compulsory for the first time in Scotland with the Education Act of 1496. Aftermath in the year 1561, the church of Scotland arranged a national program for spiritual reform, including every schools in every part of the country. In the year 1872, with the empowerment of the Education Act, the power to control the education system of the nation went out of the hands of the Church.

With the betterment of the education system in Scotland, the Scottish Funding Council started funding over the institutes for higher education: like the Scottish colleges and universities. Today, Scotland is a home to almost 14 universities which include four very renowned and ancient universities: the universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Glasgow.
