- Primary Schools: Here education begins at the age of 5 and lasts till the age of 11.
- Secondary Schools: Here education begins at the age of 11 and completes at the age of 16, 17 or 18.
All schools of England whether, Government-run schools or State Schools, follow the same National Curriculum.
The school year in England is divided into six terms and it is 39 weeks long.
The students of Secondary Schools of England have to appear in an examination at the age of 16. This examination is called General Certificate of Secondary Education. The students are to give tests on the following subjects:
- Mathematics
- English literature
- English Composition
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Biology
- History or the Classics
- One modern language
- One other subject like art or Computer Studies
The schools in England provide free education to the children between 5 years and 16 years of age.
